Alzheimer's / Dementia Care Overview
2007 means new awareness of the symptoms and behavioral patterns of Alzheimer's disease. We coordinate services and programs for those who cope with this disease's effects on a daily basis. Meeting these needs is the reason that Altercare developed special units with a unique way of caring for people suffering from Alzheimer's and related dementia.
Speret Hall is a dedicated unit, housed in eight Altercare facilities, and these units provide an environment and resources that can help the family understand the behavioral patterns that are common in dementing disorders. Speret Hall was first developed in 1978 under the guidance of members of Alzheimer's disease and Related Disorders Association (ADRDA), the national organization dedicated to enhancing care and support services for both victims and their families.
Caregivers can experience high levels of stress. Relief from this anxiety is critical in order to maintain personal balance and be an effective caregiver. The Speret Hall staff foster a special environment where residents can live more comfortably. Simple daily routines minimize over-stimulation and confusion, and create a sense of belonging, well-being and self-esteem. These are essential ingredients for quality living.
A Family-Centered Approach to Care
Families are encouraged to participate in team conference meetings that are held with Speret Hall staff, activities, and volunteer groups. Support groups meet regularly, offering families and friends a forum to discuss any topic, from coping to treatment strategies. Opportunities to learn, teach and obtain emotional support are the goal.
Individual Care
Altercare recognizes individual needs, and tailor the care plan to meet them. Our approach to caring for residents begins with a pre-admission assessment by specially-trained staff. Consultations with other professionals also facilitates appropriate placement. A comprehensive Geriatric Assessment is recommended to fully assess a patient's condition either before, or soon after, admission.
There are over 100 causes of altered mental status, and the cause needs to be known in order to deliver appropriate care. The approaches and interventions for Alzheimer's disease are very different than those used for other types of dementia. Only when a proper diagnosis is made can a plan of care be created and implemented that meets an individual's needs appropriately, effectively, and responsibly. Alzheimer's disease is responsible for approximately 60% of cognitive disorders.
Speret Hall - An Environment of Care
Every staff member employed for S peret Hall units receives 12 hours of special training, as well as continuing education. Specialized training promotes competent care. Minimizing the stress of daily life for the confused and disoriented is the focus. Gentle prompting and validation soothes and allows enjoyment and participation in social activities that are an integral part of the resident's care.
Consistency of caregivers provides a stable environment with familiar faces and reassurance. We strive for comfort and independence for as long as possible. Speret Hall units are carefully designed to meet resident's special environmental needs; attention is paid to the special details which help minimize difficulties in dealing with the loss of physical and cognitive abilities.
